Social Media culled by soror Nishi

Just deleted my Google+ account...
The real reason is just that I find it all quite boring...

Don't get me wrong, information is a valuable and fascinating thing, but streamed 24/7 through my computer it's a bit like surfing the internet without search. In fact, I feel like I'm being surfed.

Hundreds of pieces of data which other people seem to think is important flow like a river through my account. Why would I want to take time out to sift through it?

After a week or so I have 58 acquaintances .. so after 52 weeks that would be...over 3000 people dumping data on me.

Why would I want to meet friends on FaceGoo who I could meet in SL or Iwz? It doesn't really make any sense to me. If I can spend 15 minutes with someone in VWs why would I want to FaceGoo them? I don't really have people I don't meet either in RL or VWs, I've never been one to keep a constant contact with people I don't see...I sort of figure 'well, we'll catch up next time we meet'.

Then there's this thing about real names... I really hate real names of avatars, I mean, I don't know who any of them are! I get to know someone in SL, then they try to friend me on FaceGoo with their real names, like I should recognise them...duh!! I don't know anyone's real name...it's just an Avatar Alias (and, if I am told it, I forget it instantly). Why would anyone want a real name?

Twitter I find quite useful, like a message board, I can say hi or goodnight if friends are roaming free on the Interweb and they know my location ...useful.

Avatars United ... well, it's dead before it starts I would guess, I mean who would spend time on something that died already once? It was terminated by the Boys when they couldn't be bothered to keep it going..... and they aren't exactly know for their competence re. social structures. I could be proved wrong...we will see.

So, I must say it's a bit of a relief, one less thing I have to do daily, and one less thing for my mailbox... good.

Sorry, but it's just not for me, I have more important things to do and counting my ears is more interesting.

:))

  1. That is precisely why I have never had Facebook or Googlie-face-them-all. Mmmm how many ears do you have to date? Sounds interesting!

  2. Completely agree. I am just pulling my Google+ account right now. I quit FB about a year ago and I've just tried Plurk for a little while but felt swamped by stuff I mostly just don't need to know.

  3. I joined Google+ simply because two people had added me to their Circle and I started receiving tons of emails from G+ whenever these people would post anything.

I joined to be able to "set my message preferences" and uncheck every single notice, status update and whatnot, considering it as spam, as harassment and as information pollution; too much noise, not enough signal.

Given the whipsaw back-and-forth on these "avatar names" policies in the last 24 hrs, I am quite happy to not have wasted time filling in profiles and etc to add to their database.

As my avatar name is the name I plan to legally change my name to, what will G+ and the rest of them do then? Will they reinstate me after they have banned me?

Again, my simple questions take on a much greater significance when viewed in these lights. If all they want is data, they'd get plenty enough from Miso Susanowa. You'd be able to see where I went, what I posted and perhaps what I bought also. I mean heck, you can tell what "miso susanowa" likes, and target ads to "miso susanowa" just as easily as you could to my IRS/Government ID/Name.

The fact that there's some problem with tracking an obviously active and involved person on the net, using a consistent name known to the communities I frequent, makes me question the motivation of all this "we need real names" chanting. Don't you think so?

  4. @ Anna....:)) still counting...

@Tsuki ..yes, I think it's not for everyone.

@Miso... well, I think this fixation on Real Names is a Fear thing... like an attempt to control, rather than anything rational. It is irrational after all.

  5. "That was irrational of you... not to mention... unsportsmanlike" - Roy Batty to Rick Deckard in "Blade Runner"

  6. actually excessive cons are possible in FB and google+ due to people believe in "real names".... If you are and impostor, go for Facebook rather than Virtual worlds.

I agree in all u say soror and also Miso. I dont understand that fixation in REAL NAMES. I spend a lot more bucks online as Mera Kranfel than my RL id.

@Miso and @soror; "Not very sporting to fire on an unarmed opponent. I thought you were supposed to be good". (says FB and Google+)~ Blade Runner
