The University of Western Australia, and Jayjay Zifanwe and Quadrapop in particular, could write a paper on “Harmonious Integration Into Second Life”. Their arrival and establishment here has been exemplary, I think.
Like Orange did before them they have galvanised the builders and creators here and, in an intelligent manner, listened and learnt rather than try to impose any pre-conceived idea on the long-standing residents.
Now, to be announced later today, UWA will be getting a 4th sim.
VIRTLANTIS and SLenglish will be forming an educational partnership under the direction of Kip Yellowjacket, specialising, it seems, in language learning and ‘exchange’ as a non-profit making enterprise.
DanCoyote Antonelli’s Tower of Light which is a piece based on “anti-Tower of Babel” philosophy will stand at the centre of the island as a symbol of what they hope to achieve.
Uni Vice Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, (the guy who took one look at the Machinima entries for their last competition and decided to double the prize money) has made it clear apparently to all senior managers that SL is something all departments should take seriously. [Would be good if we had politicians of this calibre, one’s with a bit of spine.]
So, the 5th sim...plus....may not be that far in the future either.
UWA is also now working on a closer collab with the University of Texas, so it will be interesting to see what emerges from that...
It is great to see such positive results arising from such a lot of (extra) work which Jayjay and Quad have ploughed into this project, and I know there are many artists and builders who would join with me in saying that this success has been well earned and well deserved.
