ColeMarie Soleil and her new album

ColeMarie i have written about more than a dozen times since April 2008 when I first met her...

The Koinup article I wrote about her started....

"I would quite like to be a great photographer;
and it would be nice to have a beautiful voice;
a talent for song writing would be pretty cool;
if, on top of all that I could make excellent machinima I would have to change my name because I would be ColeMarie Soleil.

Oh, yes, she makes great clothes and magnificent dance particles as well... hmmm...probably forgot something..."

Well, the obvious thing I forgot is that she is a very warm and generous person.

So...lots of praise for someone still relatively young (I think) who has still the possibility of rolling all these assets into a whole, repeated here because she has finished and released her first album on iTunes... called Soleil.

This is one of the tracks from the album.

Bryn Oh and Cole have been very close friends for a long while now and have collaborated on a number of projects, Cole having a special skill in interpreting Bryns builds as machinima.

“I have been tired of a lot of art in SL for a while now. I would see something that was beautiful and then I would ask the artist.... "What is the story behind this?" only to very often be let down when they reply "I wanted to make something beautiful." I just needed more than that.
As I got to know Bryn as a person I realized that we both essentially in our lives want the same thing. I think that is why I have dedicated so much of my time to documenting what she does."

I consider myself very lucky too that Cole did a video of Magoo before it disappeared into the aether ...

...which I make no excuse for showing here again..

She has an angle on Machinima, as I have said somewhere before, in that she understands that it is not a poor video but an art form in its own right, and I couldn't help thinking particularly of Cole when Peter Greenaway states that cinema died in 1983 with the invention of the remote control.
Greenaway has pointed out that since its first days cinema is linked to storytelling and he posits that the new direction for cinema/machinima is to present a purely visual rather than narrative experience.

Hence his latest machinima have no storyline.

....now, although ColeMarie has linked her music here to the work of an artist with a strong storyline (Bryn), she is never chained to that story. Her machinima takes off on it's own journey exploring forms, shapes and colours in a visual installation which, as I remarked earlier, I think Peter Greenaway would love.

As I was trained in architecture and the built environment I have a different attitude to art than some. Like architecture I see my art as a place where life can happen, it's a backdrop, a framework, and while I would very rarely impose a storyline on a viewer, I can fully appreciate that some like this .... after all, I like a film with a plot.....

...but a machinima like Cole's, a visual treat for the eyes as well as the ears... that's great work.

Congratulations, Colemarie, and we look forward to seeing the rest of the album set to visuals...

Soleil....you can buy from iTunes.

Sunday Omnibus

Well, apart from having a tantrum and throwing all the toys out of my pram, I did do some other stuff this week.. and one was to go to the opening of "It was all a blur"...

..and it was a bit....
participating artists included....

Allegory Malaprop
Apatia Hammerer
Bryn Oh
Daelia Dollinger
Jojorunoo Runo
Juliette Westerburg
Lyndyn Tzara
Miel Nirvana
Moo Money
Note Buaku
OMGWTF Barbecue
Radio Signals
Redd Columbia
Riki Yifu
Sanura Sakai
Selavy Oh
Serj Enoch
Sienia Trevellion
Stoic Ixchel
Surrealia Anatine
Vintage McMillain,
....with Radio Signals being the mastermind behind it all, as far as I could see....but...
... you don't get to see much. Not that that is a criticism, part of the point of setting white builds against white backdrop is the way shapes etc merge. ColeMarie did some last year and I have done a white build as well, so nothing radical there. It is trendy and striking for the first few minutes, then annoying and I lost interest quite quickly, maybe I wasn't in the mood.

Have a look...here.

I have been very critical of collab builds in the past so I wouldn't want anyone to think I was singling out this build, which is obviously a lot of work and effort....but..

...a shed load of objects, distributed round a sim needs more 'glue' than just being all the same colour, in my opinion. I have always tried, as a rule, to ask the question "if you lost one item would the Whole suffer?" as a way of determining the strength of the 'glue'.... I was glad there was no theme, and I welcome the idea of 'setting a stage'....

I thoroughly enjoyed the non-art-perfomance of Big Ramer at my local sand pit. Watching a fox build a speedboat is my sort of thing....

The Slipper Orchid...

...and the Cappuccino Vine I have rebuilt in InWorldz which is about to be pleasantly invaded by 12 sims of Elves. Elf Spirit Lands is taking on 12 'regions' which is over half a million prims......cool......more tree huggers.

..and the highlight of my week, tho RL dragged me kicking and screaming away (was in that sort of a mood this week) , was listening to the beautiful voice of Colemarie Soleil yesterday...sweet...

All in all, a very eventful week, and the decision to give up soror Nishi Beach was one I mulled over for a long time...still... life goes on....

UWA and Cole's gals.

Well, normally gals get their panties in a twist turning up at a posh do wearing the same outfit...but...firstly, to have Sharni as Dress Sista just shows good taste, and secondly, to be wearing one of ColeMarie's latest pieces is v classy.

We both had a good giggle..... Thanks Cole...xxxx

Now.....there were lots of prizes given out and I'll leave the UWAinSL blog to give you all the details.....suffice to say....

VERTICAL SPIRAL KALEIDOSCOPE by FreeWee Ling took the first prize which I am personally v pleased about because I felt she had already submitted genus pieces in previous rounds, as did Aliz when we chatted about it the other night....

and Best Non-Scripted Entry was MEDUSA'S GAZE by Pravda Core which I blogged yesterday...

PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD - 1st prize was awarded to Lea Supermarine & Jarapanda Snook - Music of the Spheres ...

..and I hope the other worthy prize winners won't mind if I leave it at that... Jayjay will have pictures of the winners on the UWA site soon enough....

...because I want to give full details of another competition by UWA....for a Trophy Design.

here..."
UWA 3D Design Challenge Trophy Contest

The residents of Artemisia are happy to sponsor a contest to design the official award objects for the UWA 3D Design Challenges. The objects will be presented to each winner of the monthly challenge as a keepsake to display with their entries or to place on a shelf.

Prize: 3000L

Deadline for sumbissions: Saturday, July 31, 2010, 11:59 PM

Winner will be announced and the winning entry used for the July Challenge round awards at the August awards ceremony.

Submit FULL PERM entries to FreeWee Ling or deposit them in the special drop boxes at:
UWA or Artemisia

Details:

We expect that there will be only one winning award object (a trophy) to represent UWA and to be presented to all Design Challenge winners. These may or may not be used also for the Flagship Challenge. The trophy base will be customized for the specific awards. If we get several excellent entries, we may decide to use more than one. If that is the case, each winning entry will receive a full cash (Linden) prize.

ID: Submissions must be FULL PERM. Please include your name as part of the object name.

SIZE: (Your entry must be able to fit entirely within The bounding box on top of the base ( 0.2 x 0.2 x 0.25 meters). IT NEED NOT FILL THE BOX! This is the MAXIMUM size. Preference will be given to objects that are appropriately proportional. We are looking for elegance and simplicity. Note that the box is intentionally small so that the final projects may be resized larger for the different award levels. This box is the smallest they will be....[best find out about the base...it was supposed to be attached, but it went awol]

PRIMS: You are limited to a maximum of 10 (ten) prims.

NO SCRIPTED OBJECTS: The trophy should not distract from the object that won the award. It should be a simple, static object. No moving parts or particle emitters.

The award object should be in keeping with the creative energy of the UWA Challenge. It should be creative, interesting, and unique.

If you have questions please contact FreeWee Ling.

FreeWee represents the residents of Artemisia, a residential sim dedicated to living in an engaging environment. Artemisia: Living with Art."....end of..

So...get cracking geniuses...

Cole and Bryn in another masterpiece..

This is a piece by ColeMarie for Shanghai and it is, of course, well up to her usual standard. It's called No Colour, one of the Open This End themes for the show there.

The build is by Bryn who excels in that desolate landscape thingy with a few odd plants by me...... as Cole quipped.......Bryn angst meets Soror weed.

ColeMarie is really bringing a completely new medium to life in how she uses Machinima, it is fast becoming HER medium, as she seems to understand how to use it better than those who treat it like a video, which it isn't (and can't be for xx years, (or however long it takes for the graphix to get to film quality).

Her talents with photo manipulation were the first thing that amazed me, maybe two years ago when we first met, and her work in machinima is a direct continuation of those skills she taught herself in 2D image making.

The fact that she also writes and performs music, makes great clothes and amazing particle shows etc, etc....just goes to show she is a mad autonomous robot disguised as a faerie.
